Once upon a time there was a boy named Nabob. He was a spindly lad who loved to walk with his shoes and socks off. Because of this, he always came home with dirty feet. One day, after coming home with particularly dirty feet, his mother said to him, “Nabob, the next time you come home with those dirty feet I’m going to…I don’t know what I’m going to do, but it won’t be nice! Now go wash those feet and get ready for supper.”
The very next day, no sooner had Nabob exited the school doors, than his shoes were off. Two hours later when Nabob walked in the back door, his toes were stained black and green and brown with crud. His mother, who was standing at the stove stirring a pot of stew, turned, glanced down at Nabob’s feet, smiled and said, “Welcome home, Dear,” as she calmly bonked him over the head with a nearby rolling pin. When Nabob came to, he was lying in bed wearing heavy-leather hi-cut boots. Immediately, he swung his feet off the bed and bent over to take them off. At first he was perplexed. Then shock seized him when he realized that the boots were actually locked onto his feet with Kryptonite padlocks. Nabob, in a frenzy, ran to his mother’s room and demanded the keys to the boots. His mother, who was asleep in bed, opened one eye and said, “No way, José.” Nabob then tried bargaining, promising never to come home with dirty feet again. His mother feigned loud snoring. Finally, Nabob’s cries gave way to piteous begging and he said, “You’re my mom, Mom, and I love you man.” “Forget it Nabob,” said his mother, “you’re not getting the keys to those boots.” From that day forward, Nabob’s mother locked the boots on his feet every morning before he left the house and only unlocked them when Nabob put on his pajamas to go to bed. This continued until the day Nabob got married at which point his mother turned over the keys to Nabob’s wife.
